RUBY, A. Walling
Passed away on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009, at 94 years of age. Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Julia Mary Ross, and by their son Ross. Walling will be missed by his five daughters and their families: Mary Ruby (Wood Hill), Julia and Isabel Ruby-Hill; Victoria Ruby (Howard Freeman), Brooke and Ross Freeman; Joanna Ruby, Sarah and David Armstrong; Jan Ruby (Mary Thomson); Julia Ruby Foster (Robert Foster), Robert Foster (Jenny Foster), Simon Foster (Melanie Foster), Jessica Foster, Joanna Foster ( Matt Killen); and by his great-grandchildren, Robert, Thomas, Allwyn, Will and Finn. And by his sister-in-law Anne Leake.
Walling was born in Midland, Ontario, graduated from McMaster University and settled in Toronto after WWII. Walling was an officer in the RCAF and served in Fighter Command with the British RAF. He went on to have a very successful, exciting and diverse business career in finance and land development. At heart, he was forever the camp counselor of years ago, leading his family and friends on skiing adventures in Ontario and Europe, fishing and picnicking on the waters of Georgian Bay and hiking in the Haliburton Highlands. His greatest loves beyond his family and friends were the words of Shakespeare, classical music and the golden and labrador retrievers, who were ever present at his side.
Walling's family wishes to extend its most sincere and heartfelt thanks to his care giver of many years, Hanna Gulcz, for her loyal and caring support. Hanna made it possible for him to remain in his home until the last week of his long and busy life. The family also thanks the staff of ParaMed Home Care.
There will be a service in Walling's memory at Rosedale United Church, 159 Glen Road, on Monday, October 19th at 4:00 pm. A reception will follow.
Walling was a very loyal and generous supporter of his wife Julia's life long work for the safety and betterment of women and girls. In lieu of flowers, gifts to The Julia M. Ruby Fund, YWCA Toronto, 80 Woodlawn Ave. E., Toronto ON. M4T 1C1, or by phone 416-961-8101 x 352 or online at ywcatoronto.org will be gratefully received.
